Popular Types of Fish In Koi Ponds
When you are in the early planning stages of your koi pond, you should begin to plan what type of fish you would like in your “water garden”. As the name implies, koi will certainly be among the mix and most likely the jewels of your pond. These fish with their varied colors, hearty disposition, and serene demeanor can often grow to be two to three feet long!
koi come in many varieties. Your pond may concentrate on a single type or embrace many varieties. The most popular of the koi family are the Kohaku koi. Their white body and red accent pattern on the back can identify these koi. The Taisho-sanke Koi are also a white koi, but have both red and black accents. Similarly the Showa-sanke koi are a black-bodied koi with red and white accents. Many different types of koi based on their body color and accents are identified and add a rainbow of color to a backyard pond.
The metallic koi have a distinctive shine to them, almost as if covered in metal scales. These koi tend to be grouped based on how many colors they display. The Hikaimuji Koi display one color and include the golden Yamabuki Ogon and silver Gin Matsuba to name a couple.
A more recently introduced type of koi is known as the Butterfly Koi. Some purists are not particularly enamored with the long butterfly fins that have been crossbred into this collection of koi, but many fans believe they are truly the most graceful of the koi family. Some have even stated that the Butterfly Koi are hardier fish than their non-butterfly cousins. Butterfly Koi are available in most all the same types as standard koi.
As for the other types of fish you might want to round out your koi pond, much will be influenced on the climate and condition of your pond. koi are hearty fish and can survive though a wide variety of water temperatures. Not so with many other variety of fish. The most common fish to cohabitate with koi are goldfish. It is important to note that koi are not goldfish nor are they related to them. They are more closely related to carp.
